DESTINATION:

Cottonwood Campsite in Joshua Tree National Park

Near Palm Springs, California.

DEPARTURE:

Date:  Saturday, January 17, 2009
Time:  6:00 AM sharp

DEPARTURE SITE:

Brea Senior Center parking lot

INTENDED TRAVEL ROUTE:

57 freeway North, 10 freeway East,

to the 62 Highway to Joshua Tree;

then enter the Joshua Tree National Park.

TRAVEL TIME:                          Total travel time of approximately 3 hours in each direction (allowing for normal gas and meal stops). Cottonwood campground is approximately 150 miles each way, from the Brea Senior Center.

ACTIVITY ITINERARY:              This is a "drive-in" campout. There will be many opportunities for hiking, stargazing, relaxation time at camp, and time to work on scouting skills activities. While this is a drive-in type outing, we will be making stops through the park as we drive to the campsite on Saturday. Also, there will be one day away from our base camp for a day hike to Lost Palms Oasis. This hike will be about 10 miles. Please bring a day pack, 10 essentials, and water container.

RETURN:                                  MONDAY January 19, 2009 – around 3:00 PM depending upon how quickly we are able to break camp early that Monday morning. In case of a delay, parents will be called around 12:00 pm to inform them of the Troop's ETA back into Brea.

RETURN SITE:                          Brea Senior Center parking lot

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:        Have breakfast at home on Saturday; bring sack lunch in the car (will not stop at fast food locations–bring your own meal) and at least $6.00 for lunch coming home on Monday. Additionally, if you wish, please bring money for snacks along the way when we do stop for gas. Minimum funds needed: $10 to $15 per person.
